Candidate Info
Name: William Russell
Dear TWHBEA Member;
I am William Russell and I have placed my name in nomination for one of the four seats on the board of directors from Tennessee. By way of this letter I hope to introduce myself. There are two aspects I want to briefly outline about myself which have led me to seek a seat on the board.
First and foremost, I own, breed, exhibit, and love Tennessee Walking Horses. My wife, Alice, and I have lived in Shelbyville since January, 2003- following our horses from Chattanooga. We have three broodmares and register one to three foals a year. We take great pride and pleasure throughout the breeding to foaling to maturation of these colts. To date, we have offspring on the trail, as breeding stock and in the showring. Presently, I have two horses in training and enjoy exhibiting.
Secondly, I want to outline my professional and business background which will assist me as a member of the board. In 2003, I retired following 23 years as Professor of Surgery at The University of Tennessee. Presently, I maintain an active practice of General and Vascular Surgery in Shelbyville. I have been honored to serve in many leadership positions including two National Medical Boards - The American Board of Surgery and The American Board of Family Medicine. These appointments have afforded opportunities to work with many groups, some with similar agendas and others with dissimilar agendas: with the goal of reaching a just and equitable conclusion.
The Tennessee Walking Horse Community needs sound and honest representation. I do not propose to know all the answers, but I do know that we have two ears and one mouth - my intention, if elected, is to listen, learn and voice my opinion in a considered and clear manner. We must focus on the breed as a whole and expend our energy and resources on issues and not personalities.
Very sincerely yours,
William L. Russell
